architect: jean nouvel. reenie was project architect
building type+location: headquarters for an insurance company, cologne, germany
invisible elements: sited on the river, where barges transport coal and industrial cargo, the programme aimed to deploy more state of the art technologies for active video screen façade systems such as liquid crystal screens and LED interfaces. moving on from the heavy industry of the ruhr valley into the emerging digital industry, the building design is an expression of the rapidly developing computer technologies of the time. this project explored the accelerating speed of information transfer and communication at the dawn of the digital age.
