yi sun "upholstered creche landscape"

architect: reenie (karin) elliott
building type+location: newcastle crèche and primary school housed in infrastructure of cooling towers, and form part of industrial site regeneration on a disused power station.

invisible elements:

1- the children play and learn in a sumptuous landscape of upholstery, draped around and extending out from the interior walls of the cooling tower.

2- this project opposed the ritual demolition of hauntingly beautiful industrial structures from the thatcher era.  It was titled ‘work the black seam’ and proposed these structures would be reinhabited by new uses which would evoke an admiration for their industrial history.  sadly, they were demolished and replaced by yet another monotonous suburban development.
client: national power, newcastle
competition date: 1992
